![]() Personally, I love that dark and moody atmosphere, and the influence of Blade Runner on the idea of cyberpunk and dystopian sci-fi is undeniable. It’s not a bad thing, just a matter of differing tastes. So this may not be a film for you (I’m not gonna say anything like “you don’t have taste” or whatever other pretentious thing film people say when people don’t like a certain movie they love) because the issues you’re having with it are intentional choices that are basically the backbone of the whole genre. This was accentuated through heavy shadows and dark, moody cinematography. The bright spectacle films like Wizard of Oz no longer kept the attention of a world that had seen Nazis, so films started delving into the seedy underbelly of society with corrupt characters and morally grey stories. The issue you’re having with it visually and somewhat in understanding the story is because it’s noir, which is French for “black,” and used to describe a stylistic trend in many post-WWII films (it’s present before, but really gained popularity with the growing cynicism caused by WWII). I really think if I watched in a low quality theatre in the 80s, I would have had no idea what I just watched. ![]() Am I alone here? Just opening the discussion. But I feel like it makes for a rather miserable viewing experience when it’s so difficult to make out wtf is going on. Turn on a lamp!!!), raining constantly, mumbly lines, scenes and characters that seem to just come out of nowhere and you’re thinking ‘what’s happening? Who is this?’ My taste in movies may just be too unrefined to interpret all of these film-making decisions as ‘brilliant’, as I’m sure is the take of many die-hard fans. So dark (The most light we get is like obnoxious city lights gleaming through the window blinds from that advertisement blimp. ![]() Could ANYONE have been able to follow it? No offense to those who love it (I am trying to enjoy!) but it is such an eyesore and just generally hard to follow. ![]() I’m imagining someone watching this in the movie theatre in the 80s and want to laugh. I’m watching this in 2022, with a big screen HD tv, subtitles, no distractions, and the freedom to pause/rewind whenever I want and process what’s happening. ![]()
